Beyond Benign and the Green Chemistry Teaching and Learning Community (GCTLC)
Presented on April 9, 2024 by Dr. Jonathon Moir - Senior Program Manager at Beyond Benign for the Green Chemistry Teaching and Learning Community platform & Dr. Nimrat Obhi - Program Manager for the Green Chemistry Teaching and Learning Community
Abstract: Green chemistry is an upstream, preventative approach that can address global sustainability challenges, including fulfilling the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals. Green chemistry is not a discrete field of chemistry but rather a framework grounded in twelve principles that teaches chemists to “reduce or eliminate the use or generation of hazardous substances in the design, manufacture, and application of chemical products”. Green chemistry can help practising chemists undertake research and product design more efficiently, safely, and with fewer environmental and human health impacts. Currently, green chemistry is not taught ubiquitously in schools and university programs globally, despite being an essential framework. However, the green chemistry educational community has been growing rapidly and its importance is becoming more widely recognized.
To help schools to achieve these transformations and shift how chemistry is taught, Beyond Benign-a registered 501(c)3 non-profit based in the U.S. -supports educators (including higher education faculty and K-12 teachers) to teach chemistry through the lens of green chemistry. Beyond Benign recently launched the Green Chemistry Teaching and Learning Community (GCTLC) in partnership with the ACS Green Chemistry Institute. The GCTLC is a virtual platform that provides a one-stop shop for all things green chemistry education. This presentation will provide an overview of Beyond Benign’s programs and in particular a discussion of the newly launched GCTLC platform. Our approach to creating an inclusive and welcoming space that fosters a sense of belonging will be emphasized. Ultimately, we will discuss how the GCTLC creates opportunities for ongoing engagement through a global community of practice for green chemistry education.
Biographies: Dr. Jonathon Moir completed his B.Sc.H. at Queen’s University in 2010 (Chemistry, minor in Physics) and his Ph.D. at the University of Toronto in 2016 in Inorganic Chemistry where his research focused on the synthesis and development of nanostructured metal oxide semiconductor thin films for photoelectrochemical applications. During his doctoral studies, Jonathon was a founding member of the Green Chemistry Initiative (GCI), a group of graduate students dedicated to promoting green chemistry principles and practices within the Department of Chemistry at the University of Toronto. In addition to co-leading numerous initiatives, Jonathon redeveloped a third-year undergraduate organic chemistry lab in collaboration with Professor Andy Dicks to include more concepts related to green chemistry, and later attended the ACS Green Chemistry Summer School in 2016. Following graduate school, Jonathon transitioned to the not-for-profit sector, where he has helped manage and support the development of international, interdisciplinary research programs, scientific projects, workshops and symposia as well as a national scholarship program in Canada for graduate students and postdoctoral fellows. He is currently the Senior Program Manager at Beyond Benign for the Green Chemistry Teaching and Learning Community (GCTLC) platform and lives in Vancouver, British Columbia, Canada.
Dr. Nimrat Kaur Obhi is from Ottawa, Canada and obtained their HBSc in Biomedical Sciences (Medicinal Chemistry) at the University of Ottawa in 2014. They completed their PhD in chemistry at the University of Toronto in 2020, where their research focused on the synthesis and investigation of carbon-based semiconducting polymers with complex architectures for electronic applications. During this time, Nimrat also completed a Chemistry Teaching Fellowship Award to design and implement a green chemistry course module into an upper-year chemistry course at the University of Toronto. They are committed to justice, equity, and diversity and have worked with local and national teams on advocacy and policy initiatives since 2014. Nimrat joined Beyond Benign as a Higher Education Program Manager in 2021 where their past work includes open-access curriculum development and supporting green chemistry education at Minority Serving Institutions. Currently, Nimrat is a Program Manager for the Green Chemistry Teaching and Learning Community (GCTLC), where they develop community engagement and equity and justice initiatives for the platform. Nimrat currently lives in Ottawa, Ontario, and outside of work they are an avid skier, cook, outdoor sports enthusiast, swimmer, stationery lover, and bookbinder.

The best definition for Biochar I have seen is Charcoal that has been innoculated with biology. IE living Char. It is too bad, you didn't figure out how to bake stuff to make char, it is just low or no oxygen which I have used everything from a cookie tin thrown in a fire to a TLUD in a 55 gallon drum. I tried to use the oven once but that was a smokey mess. :)

At 250 to 450 Centigrade PFAS will under go thermal desorption and/or thermal decomposition depending on chain length and functional group. What data do you have from the pyrolysis gas and condensate is free of any PFAS? If biosolids will carbonize, then so will PFAS as it has a carbon backbone. Have you do total fluorine analysis for a mass balance?

After watching this presentation I have concluded that this evaluation of the WCTI ultra-soft Makeup for Cooling Tower operation was flawed from its inception and application. The focus was on water savings without taking into account all of the other benefits with taking the CT Systems up to the 100x - 200x COC range. The failure to attain microbiological control and corrosion control for mild steel, were directly caused by not achieving the WCTI target pH, TDS and SiO2 concentrations through natural evaporative concentration. This critique of WCTI chemistry and its effectiveness documented how the process can be corrupted by mixing traditional chemical treatment philosophy into the program. Adding SiO2 to operating CT Systems is not recommended by WCTI because if the concentrated SiO2 product is not uniformly diluted at least 1:10 before injection into a turbulent, circulating CT water stream, the high OH- alkalinity contributed by the product and the high local concentration of SiO2 will drive CaCO3 scale formation and co-precipitation of MgSiO2. This will result in a tenacious, difficult-to-dissolve deposit. Naturally cycling the ultra-soft MU water into the 100x to 200x range will result in Total Hardness less than 30 ppm, pH in the 9.7 -10.0 range, SiO2 >200 ppm and TDS >20,000 ppm. Under these conditions, the corrosion rates and microbiological activity will be greatly improved over the data presented in this study. The background, guidelines and results are presented in a paper published by the Journal "PATHOGENS" that can be accessed online. Do a GOOGLE search on "Lon Brouse Pathogens." I was the chemical consultant and lead author of this paper, titled, "Natural Pathogen Control Chemistry to Replace Toxic Treatment of Microbes and Biofilm in Cooling Towers" 2016. I authored a follow-up article titled "Biofilm and Pathogen Inhibition in Cooling Towers Using Natural Chemistry," that was published in March of 2020, available online at encyclopedia.pub/259 that presented additional field data from two large data centers, one on the east U.S. coast and another on the west coast. These articles will give a much more accurate representation of the results that can be obtained using properly administered WCTI chemistry. Effective control of very large data center cooling towers continues to this day and is a testament to the process.

morgellons cover story or scapegoat LOL .. the microfibers are actually from the manufacturer of the dryers... just looked inside of my dryer and there is some insulation like material looks wooly almost on both the front and back end like a "weather stripping" or seal inside the dryer drum and is the source of the microfibers not our clothes.. my clothes fibers do not fluoresce under UV light but the microfibers on them which is minimal compared to the fabric volume of the clothes do, and those fibers are again source from inside the dryer at the fiber seal at front and back .... shall klausy and company dictate what we can wear and when we can do laundry for 2030 also?

This is baffling. When I worked with a wastewater/freshwater specialist here in San Luis Obispo County, California he had assured me numerous times that the output section of the wastewater and the output section of Diablo Canyon were both portable water, but it was not approved by the EPA. So how is it getting through? Graywater leach lines? The Blackwater treatment plants use various tanks with various microbes to break everything down and by the time it leaves that facility it's supposed to be portable water. I've been in those facilities and there's some tanks that contain smells that are horrible but bearable and there's a tank that contains a odor that you will never get used to. This is a very rigorous process that this wastewater goes through. I will finish this video now. I'm disappointed in humanity and I just want to find closure now.
